Clover Maitland won successive gold medals with the Hockeyroos in 1996 and 2000.
The goalkeeper played a starring role in Australia’s success, with her sharp reflexes and cool, decisive play proving a formidable last line of defence. Maitland was at her best in Atlanta, where she was in goal when Australia beat South Korea 3-1 in the final. Of the eight matches played in Atlanta, Australia outscored its opponents 27-5 – proof how stingy the world’s best defence proved to be. The defence was again outstanding in Sydney as Maitland and team-mates won another Olympic title.
