Matthew Smith

1973 -

Matthew Smith won a bronze medal as a member of the Australian men’s hockey team in 1996. From New South Wales, Smith was a striker noted for his speed and scoring ability. The team went through the preliminary round undefeated, recording four wins and a draw from its five matches. In the semi-final they were beaten by Spain 2-1. The Kookaburras returned to their winning ways in the bronze medal final, beating Germany 3-2. Smith played more than 100 games for the Kookaburras, retiring from international competition after the team won a gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
